On the road to the 2nd Justicia Global International Summit!
May 25-27, 2006. Dominican Republic
|
Greetings and happy New Year -- may 2006 be a year for Global Justice!
We continue working with great enthusiasm toward the 2nd International Summit of Justicia Global.
At this time we have several things to share with you:
1) Activities for the promotion of Justicia Global in
Indiana, USA.
In January we held several events and activities in Indiana, USA.
Two of our members from the Dominican Republic traveled to Indiana to meet and share with students of Goshen and Earlham Colleges, as well as high school students and local media. We spoke about the realities in the Dominican Republic today and our vision for a culture of solidarity.
On Friday, January 13 in Goshen College's Newcomer Center, nearly a hundred people attended a talk given by
Mariela Jáquez and Berenice
Pacheco. On Saturday the 14th, many of the same people attended a workshop on the creation of long-term strategies for social change, facilitated by Tim and Jason Shenk.
It was a success that many diverse groups of young people could participate in these activities. Two of the outstanding groups were the Latino Student Union of Goshen College and the Hispanic group, Nueva Identidad de Vida (Grupo NIV), the latter collaborating by sharing a short guitar recital on Friday night.
At Earlham, groups of women from campus and the community came together to learn about Justicia Global's mission and they committed to send a delegation to the 2nd International Summit in May.

2) Luis Britto García and Justicia Global.
We have the honor of announcing the participation of Luis Britto Garcia as a presenter. Mr. Britto is a lawyer, scholar, newspaper columnist and researcher from Venezuela. He has won numerous awards for his literary works, including novels, articles and theater scripts. His most outstanding honor was winning the National Award for Literature in Venezuela in 2001.
Mr. Britto has done several important investigations on manipulation in the mass media especially in his country of origen. Currently, he is finishing a book on Latin American integration and alternatives to US-backed free trade.
Thanks to his vast history as writer and thinker, he will be able to speak during the conference on mass media manipulation and Latin American social movements.
3) In March: Justicia Global goes to Venezuela
Plans are also falling into place for Justicia Global's trip to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela at the end of March. We will hold activities and conferences in Merida and Barinas, and possibly Caracas.
Details forthcoming. Write to us at: encuentrojusticiaglobal@yahoo.com.
4) Justicia Global debates issues in Dominican Republic.
Here in the Dominican Republic, we're involved in a process of study and debate of the subjects that we'll focus on in the International Summit in May.
At the end of January and the beginning of February Justicia Global held our 10th Analysis of Current Events, titled, "When Discrimination is Made Law."
It had to do with the recent modification of the Dominican migration law, which takes away the right to Dominican citizenship to children born in the DR to undocumented parents. This law directly affects the Haitian population in this country and is contrary to the Dominican constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights developed by the United Nations.
Desireé del Rosario and Fátima Portorreal
spoke on the ramifications of these developments from the perspective of the law and the anthropological perspective, respectively.
In these times of increased fear of foreigners and increased racism among Dominicans toward Haitians, Justicia Global sees the necessity of making ourselves and others more aware of this situation. We take into account that the media and the Dominican Supreme Corte present these unjust acts as "natural consequences" of the "Haitian problem" -- as if Haitian people deserved to be discriminated against because of their nationality and race.
